To maintain a database of 25 or 50 franchisees is probably a manageable task for most franchisors.  Updating contact information, staying abreast of new   franchise openings, maintaining current status notes on each franchisee, and remaining current on royalty collections, would be time consuming, but manageable.  Furthermore, staying on top of each franchise sales transaction and where it is in the sales process in order to comply with Federal Trade Commission regulations would most likely be possible as well.  However, when the franchise total tops 100, 500, 1000 or more then the job of managing that level of franchisees becomes much more complex.  For example, the ability to know without a doubt that the franchise sales process is being closely followed while staying legally compliant, or being able to accurately maintain current information on all franchisees, or feeling confident that all royalties are being accounted for and collected, would become more difficult.  Franchise numbers at this level would require an extensive franchise database system and the expertise to manage it efficiently.
